As more companies embrace digital transformation, knowing how to effectively scale their digital initiatives has become paramount. But CIOs should realize they cannot shoulder the responsibility alone, according to Wolfgang Bauriedel, executive director at Russell Reynolds Associates Inc.
Bauriedel spoke with SearchCIO at the recent MIT Sloan CIO Symposium, where he offered digital transformation tips for IT executives. In this video, he explains why IT-business collaboration and hiring the right talent are key drivers behind digital transformation success stories. He also discusses why adopting agile and DevOps methodologies are digital transformation tips that CIOs should abide by.

What digital transformation tips do you have for CIOs trying to scale their digital initiatives?
Wolfgang Bauriedel: I would probably break it down into four components, which I advise them to do in parallel. No. 1 would be to create internal alliances and alignment around your digital journey, because you cannot do it alone as a CIO. You need to have a broad backing, particularly by the business executives and your peers in the business.
No. 2 is an architectural challenge: How can I transform, particularly my back office IT, into something which resembles a very modular, API-driven, microservice-driven architecture so I can adopt and change and be flexible around some of the future applications I develop.
No. 3 would be around the talent. I need to have an upgraded talent in my organization. The difference between an average digital talent and a good one is 100 times. Make sure that you have the right people in your organization to do this.
And No. 4 is collaboration -- meaning both from an IT and a business perspective. Take the agile and DevOps methodology to heart so that you can cross-functionally and multidisciplinary create your services and offerings together.
