In a purchasing intentions survey last year, 2,700 networking and IT executives pointed to enterprise network security, Wi-Fi and data center network architecture upgrades as their top networking priorities for 2014. One-third of respondents picked security as a key area of concern, 27% selected wireless and 25% pointed to data center upgrades.

Wait, there's more: Virtualizing network devices and preparing for software-defined networking are also enterprise action items for the year ahead, indicating that continuing investments in traditional hardware will go hand in hand with the exploration of newer technologies. The impact of the latter, along with networks' increasing complexity, will no doubt keep admins and execs busy aligning with C-level goals and addressing their bring your own device blind spot in 2014.

The survey was conducted around the time of the Target breach, so it probably doesn't reflect new enterprise security priorities stemming from that incident. It'll be interesting to compare to next year's results.
