Career advice for CIOs: Four qualities of a leader and more

Looking for a job or just want to boost your standings? Companies want CIOs who can leverage IT investments for greater automation, value and risk management, says a CIO recruiter. senior news writer Linda Tucci talks about careers in this podcast with CIO recruiter Shawn Banerji, managing director of technology and business services at Russell Reynolds Associates Inc. in New York. Banerji says the most able CIOs bring four "core competencies" to the job: strategy, execution, team leadership and the ability to influence. With the exception of financial services, the marketplace for CIOs is "remarkably robust," he says. Companies are looking for CIOs who can leverage their considerable investment in IT of recent years by, for example, consolidating to a hub-and-spoke model, using governance to synchronize technology and business goals and by better managing risk.

BIOGRAPHY: Based in New York, Banerji recruits CIOs and CTOs across a variety of industries, including banking and insurance, publishing and media, as well as process industries such as energy and distribution. He also has extensive experience in the technology and business process outsourcing marketplace. This includes shared/business services search work for large corporations. Prior to joining Russell Reynolds in 1999, Banerji worked in the advertising industry at Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide Inc.. He is fluent in Bengali, English and Hindi.
