Dell offers Intel dual-core servers for SMBs
Dell Inc. unveiled this week the PowerEdge SC430 server for SMBs, featuring Intel Corp.'s new dual-core processor technology.
The PowerEdge SC430 comes standard with Dell Server Assistant for PowerEdge SC, a management utility designed to make OS installation and troubleshooting quick and easy.
The dual-core technology featured in the PowerEdge SC430 combines two processing units into a single processor chip for increased performance, which allows the server to perform as an e-mail, file/print or shared Internet access server.
The Dell PowerEdge SC430 supports Windows Server 2003, Red Hat and SuSE Linux operating systems and is available worldwide. Pricing begins at $499.
Microsoft touts Windows Server System discount package for SMBs
Microsoft has rolled out its Windows Server System for SMBs, which bundles three core technologies at a discount price for companies with 25 to 400 PCs.
The Windows Server System combines Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 and Microsoft Operations Manager 2005.
The Windows Server System combination package is offered at about a 20% discount from individual license pricing to provide predictable licensing costs for SMBs with smaller IT staffs and budgets.

Hitachi Data Systems introduces midrange storage systems
Hitachi Data Systems this week launched a new line of midrange storage systems designed to offer SMBs enterprise-level functions in midmarket packaging and price.
The Hitachi TagmaStore adaptable modular storage and workgroup modular storage systems are intended to succeed the Hitachi Thunder 9500 V Series modular storage system.
Both TagmaStore storage lines offer functions such as logical cache partitioning and virtual storage ports with secure host storage domains to provide secure data access to business applications such as Microsoft Exchange, enterprise resource planning, customer relationship management or databases.
Pricing starts just below $20,000 for the WMS 100 system.
Meeting Maker Inc. launches collaborative calendaring tool for Microsoft Outlook
Waltham, Mass.-based Meeting Maker Inc., a maker of time management software, unveiled this week Meeting Maker for Microsoft Outlook.
Meeting Maker for Microsoft Outlook offers users collaborative group scheduling functions that ordinarily requires an SMB to install a Microsoft Exchange server.
The software is available in English, French and German. Prices start at $949 for a 10-user license, with nonprofit and educational discounts available.
New Wi-Fi tool for SMBs has less than 10 access points
AdventNet Inc. this week released a small business edition of its wireless network management system, WiFi Manager 4.
WiFi Manager 4 offers all the same management, security and intrusion detection functions as Pleasanton, Calif.-based AdventNet's professional edition, but is limited to 10 access points. It supports vendors such as 3Com Corp., Avaya Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co., Dell Inc. and Linksys.
The company also offers WiFi Manager editions that support 50, 100, 500 and unlimited access points.
WiFi Manager small business edition costs $495.
Symbol Technologies offers bar code scanner for midsized retailers
Holtsville, N.Y.-based Symbol Technologies Inc. is offering a bar code scanner aimed at emerging markets and midsized retailers.
The new LS9203 scanner incorporates omni directional scanning, which eliminates the need to orient the bar code for faster and more accurate read rates. The LS9203 is designed to be compact, durable and affordable for SMBs.
The scanner's retail price is $293.
