The ability to drive innovation is a necessary CIO trait in the era of digital business, according to Kelly Manthey, global chief strategy officer at mobile consulting firm Solstice Mobile. When asked about balancing innovation and "keep-the-lights-on" IT functions, Manthey noted that Solstice clients are turning to cloud computing and DevOps to help them move beyond the status quo.

"Our whole business is centered on helping companies drive innovation and ultimately business results with emerging tech. Our clients are working with us because they see the value in bringing an outside perspective to help them drive innovation and see the opportunities they sometimes can't. The CIO organization is playing a role in the ideation and ultimately determining the skills and staffing needed to thrive as a digital business. We see the enterprise looking to cloud infrastructure, software-as-a-service solutions, and modern approaches to software development and DevOps that afford speed and efficiency so that they can shift the time typically spent on running the business to innovation."
