The Customer Experience Award is given to a leader who has made strides in building customer relationships and enhancing the experience of the external customer. Our Customer Experience Award winner, Jonathan Reichental, CIO of the city of Palo Alto, Calif., pledged to undertake an open-government initiative when he took up the post in 2011. In a simple but effective move, he used Twitter to allow community members to ask questions of the mayor, city manager and other city leaders. He also headed up the launch of an open data platform, then championed the release of an open budget book that makes five years of city financial data available to everybody.
