When Anne Margulies took over as state CIO of the commonwealth of Massachusetts, she faced challenges that are familiar to any CIO taking over the reins at an enterprise in the current economic recession: In a downturn, every organization has to do more with less.

In part one of this podcast, Alexander B. Howard, associate editor for SearchCompliance.com, interviews Margulies about being a state CIO, investing in the right technology at the right time and migrating current technology to next-generation platforms while still keeping the state's IT infrastructure running.

Margulies goes on to discuss disaster recovery, collaborative tools and how to get all technologies to work together in part two of this interview.

BIOGRAPHY: Margulies has been CIO for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts since July 2007. Prior to that, she was executive director of MIT OpenCourseWare, MIT's initiative to publish openly and freely over the Internet the basic teaching materials for essentially its entire curriculum.
