Drowning in work? A new survey on IT workloads from staffing firm Robert Half Technology suggests you're not alone. Sixty-six percent of CIOs said their IT staffs had heavier workloads than 12 months ago.
Only 4% reported a decrease in workloads, and 30% reported no change from a year ago.
The greater demands placed on IT staffs are due to a surge in new initiatives, rather than staff reductions, according to the poll data.
When asked if the heavier workloads were due more to decreased staff or to new projects, 85% of CIOs said new projects were the reason, compared with 8% who said reductions and 4% who said both.
An improved economy has spurred companies to pull the trigger on projects that were stalled during the tech recession, said Katherine Spencer Lee, executive director of the Robert Half Technology, in a statement released with the report.
Recent government regulations requiring tighter controls, including the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, have also added to IT responsibilities.
Lee cautioned that CIOs and their managers should watch out for burnout among valued employees, regularly reviewing workers' assignments to "ensure their to-do lists are manageable."
The poll included responses from more than 1,400 CIOs from a stratified random sample of U.S. companies with 100 or more employees.
