In the largest-ever computer product recall, Dell Inc. said Monday it would recall 4.1 million of its notebook PC batteries because they can overheat and catch on fire.
The lithium ion batteries, manufactured by Sony Corp., were used in Latitude, Inspiron and Dell Precision notebook computers shipped between April 2004 and July 18, 2006. The recall accounts for about 19% of the 22 million notebooks Round Rock, Texas-based Dell sold during that time period, according to reports.
Notebook batteries and power supplies are among the most frequently recalled computer products.
Images of burning Dell laptops were displayed on the Internet for several weeks before Monday's recall.
