Do most people within manufacturing (OEM, CM and suppliers)value chain consider the lack of real-time inventory and demand signal visibility a huge pain and consider its solution a "must have?"

Yes and no. Visibility into supply chain operations and activities is a huge issue that manufacturers finally appear ready to address. A recent survey of supply chain professionals in Aberdeen's Supply Chain Access community (www.supplychainaccess.com) found that 75% of respondents rate supply chain visibility as one of the most challenging issues they currently face. However, manufacturers vary in their opinion as to whether this information needs to be "real-time." In most cases, companies are getting batch feeds of inventory and demand status at pre-determined intervals -- e.g., twice a day or once per hour, etc.
